The nine books that make up this volume are both a record of the difficulty of narrating as the chronicle of a passion. Three of them could be called "daily" (the II, which in part reflects the first return of James to the United States, some memories of travel and the reaction to the death of the mother, the VII, which reflects on The American tour of 1904-1905, after twenty years of absence, and VIII, a set of "sketches natural 'in various parts of London), the rest are mostly workbooks in which the situation contained since interview or the story promising to exhaustive discussion, chapter by chapter in a long novel that moves hard.
